During the day I'm a mild-mannered professor at California State University, Chico, where I teach in the Department of Communication Design. I work primarily with undergraduate students in courses on photography, design, creativity, and innovation.
When I'm not in the classroom, I'm probably engaged in some other kind of creative endeavor. I'm a nationally collected and exhibited photographer and have three book publications that include Everyday: A Yearlong Photo Diary, and two collaborative projects; Third Views, Second Sights: A Rephotographic Survey of the American West (with Mark Klett et al.) and Yosemite in Time: Ice Ages, Tree Clocks, Ghost Rivers (with Mark Klett and Rebecca Solnit). For more information about these works, please follow the Publications link to the left. Some of my long-time collaborative work with Mark Klett can be seen on Klett&Wolfe.com and Thirdview.org.
I have had numerous exhibitions and my work is held in many permanent collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City, Missouri. I am a recipient of the Santa Fe Prize for Photography and am a 2009 Guggenheim Fellow.
I live in Northern California with my wife, two boys, dozens of fruit trees, and almost as many chickens. For fun I build fine-art incubators, bake French pastries, and am a practice-player for the Chico State Women's basketball team. I carry a camera with me everywhere I go (except for the basketball court).
Here's an abridged pdf version of my résumé. Please contact me if you need additional information.
